To Blow or Flow: The Mood Swings of Volcanic Eruptions

Silica-rich magmas have produced the most voluminous and explosive eruptions in Earth history. Recent observations of such events have shown that the eruptions were initially very explosive, followed by mixed explosive and effusive behavior and ending with a benign viscous lava dome/flow. Dr. Giachetti will explain why this progression is common to most, if not all, silicic magmas.
