The mission of the Yachats Academy of Arts & Sciences is to provide educational and entertainment opportunities for people on the central Oregon coast. Sponsored by Polly Plumb Productions, we encourage the residents of the village of Yachats, Oregon to work with Academy board members to organize those events that they judge to be most enjoyable.
Oregon's Gray Whales – From the Expert
Dr Carrie Newell
Dr. Newell has been studying summer resident gray whales in the Depoe Bay area for more than thirty years. Many individual whales return yearly to this part of the Oregon coast and Dr. Newell has named some of them. Whales are recognizable by exterior markings such as scars and barnacle patterns. Dr. Newell has learned that, unlike their Alaskan relatives, gray whales in Oregon eat mysid shrimp.
